Grand Duke Nicholas has been arrested

June 2, 1917

Grand Duke Nicholas, the former commander of the Russian armies, has been arrested "as a result of royalist riots at Tilfis," according to an Exchange Telegraph dispatch from Petrograd, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The grand duke commanded the Russian armies during the early months of the war.  He was later sent to the Caucasus, where he was designated "as supreme commander by Emperor Nicholas on the abdication of the emperor," but the revolutionists "opposed the appointment  because of Grand Duke Nicholas' ties to the Romanov family.   He was forced to retire.  Only one month ago, it was reported that Grand Duke Nicholas had arrived "at his estate in the Crimea."
